Feast Like a Warrior: Forge an Eating SPIKE!
Today I am working on a “1 Hour Build” out in the Sadie Smithy making a Viking eating spike. This is a possible Viking tool that would have been a multi use object for eating, poking holes, picking out and making nets, and similar jobs needing a sharp point. I start with a 6” long piece 1/4” mild steel square bar, forge out one end and create a scroll ended ring. I then put in an opposite twist below the ring, before tapering the remaining end into the eating spike. I finished the spike on the grinder and then heated and quenched it in canola oil with an added torch finish to that oil.

    Great job restoring a beautiful piece of history and a useful tool that will continue to serve anyone who is fortunate enough to own it. The only qualm I have is, why would you discard the original handle? I have salvaged far worse that have survived for years of hard use. It would have been preferable in my opinion had in been in as close to original condition as possible. Aside from that personal preference, Amazing work! 👍🏻

    I make them out of wood. I carve Scandinavian inspired eating utensils for camping or daily use. One of my main sellers is what I call “Scandi Meat Spikes. Forks are new historically speaking. The wood ones came first because metal was expensive. Great video as usual. 🎸🔪

    Both axe builds are at the bottom of the list because they're just historically inaccurate AF

    • @TheArtofCraftsmanship
      @TheArtofCraftsmanship 19 годин тому

      Well, the shape of mine is a direct historical shape replica, although of course it’s made from a new head. Either way, loads of people are watching and enjoying the video. Thanks for watching.

    • @user-wx3wx5vy3q
      @user-wx3wx5vy3q 12 годин тому

      @@TheArtofCraftsmanship yeah maybe for a wood cutting axe but your video title is for a battle axe and they did not have wood cutting axe handles. It's not historically accurate to what they would use in battle. You should probably check out shadiversity or scholaglatoria and also pieces from a museum

    • @user-wx3wx5vy3q
      @user-wx3wx5vy3q 12 годин тому

      @@TheArtofCraftsmanship I believe you just made it into the shape of a modern wood cutting axe handle and that's exactly what it looks like. It's cool don't get me wrong, just towards the bottom of the list of stuff that's been made for this challenge. It is a challenge and people are voting.

  • @user-wx3wx5vy3q
    @user-wx3wx5vy3q 3 дні тому

    Battle axes didn't have wood splitting axe handles, the other guy that made a Viking axe made the same mistake. You should check out Shadiversity or scholagladitoria for more information on historically accurate battle axe information

    Awesome video and channel. Does the heat from the grinding affect the temper of the cutting edge?

    • @TheArtofCraftsmanship
      @TheArtofCraftsmanship 3 дні тому

      To avoid affecting the temper, I kept the blade cool throughout the grinding process by quenching it often in water.

    A good tip is to add a drop of washing up liquid, it makes it flow better by breaking the surface tension of the water. Also get plenty of it on so it has time to soak or it will just dry on the surface and easily rub off.

    Its feel good to see a "messy" workshop full of tools, materials, dirt and other stuff. Reminds me of my grandpa's place (and my father's and mine as well). Many YT channels has workshops too clean and feels a little staged to me. The axe is real nice and the intro was great.

    Always wanted to figure out how people balanced stones so precariously on one another. Much obliged for both your teachings and making sure to put the stones back after you were done with them. Now I need to try making a rock Voltron out of my collection in my back yard to see if it works out. 😂

    For etching a design I've always liked to use a resist stencil (vinyl, wax, nail polish, even electrical tape) and current run through a dauber with salty water grounded through the piece. Works very quickly, is easy and cheap, and gives a little more natural feel while still being accurate.
